London - Suspected killers cleared by the courts should be forced to stand trial again where DNA genetic fingerprinting unearths "compelling" new evidence, the British Director of Public Prosecutions recommended yesterday.

Mr David Calvert-Smith said the law on double jeopardy - where no defendant can be tried twice for the same crime - should be relaxed in exceptional cases, for serious crimes such as murder.
