PLANS by a private company to build a privately run terminal at Dublin Airport received two setbacks last night.
Planning officials from Fingal County Council said there would be serious problems in servicing the proposed site at Huntstown House on the Naul road.
A letter from the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications, Mr Dukes, says that, even if planning permission is granted, the company behind the proposal, Huntstown Air Park, might not be "the most suitable private sector interest".
He said it would be necessary to pursue a public process designed to find the most suitable company to develop a new terminal.
Last night Fingal county councillors discussed a resubmitted planning application from the company and there was strong opposition from some councillors.
Councillor Peter Coyle (Labour) said one of the biggest issues was safety. "Can we really have two separate companies operating two terminals in Dublin Airport," he asked.
A spokesman for Aer Rianta said the proposed location of the new terminal was "completely wrong".
The proposed terminal would include two multi storey car parks, a number of bars, restaurants and a duty free area.
Mr Dukes, who recently met Huntstown Air Park representatives, said his department was still considering the proposal and would be looking at independent consultancy work.
For the terminal to go ahead, both Mr Dukes and Fingal County Council would have to give permission.
A final decision will be taken in two months by Fingal County Council, although Mr Dukes is expected to reach a decision earlier than that.
