Naval divers today continued their search for the body of a Polish teenager who vanished with his father while fishing last Sunday.

Strong winds are believed to have swept 13-year-old Matthias Latek and his father Piotr in to the sea off rocks at Cod’s Head in west Cork. His father’s body was recovered by divers on Wednesday morning.

A Navy spokesman said divers have continued searching for the missing Polish teenager over the weekend.

“Using local knowledge on tides and currents the team of eight divers made five dives yesterday looking for items of clothing and other personal belongings but with no success,” said Lt Cdr Terry Ward. “Today diving operations are continuing and the team will remain on scene as long as the Coastguard require them.”

Mr Latek (40), was living in Kenmare, Co Kerry, and had worked in a bakery for the last two years. His teenage son was visiting on holiday.

The pair were reported missing on Tuesday when they failed to meet Mr Latek’s father, who had flown in from Poland.

Mr Latek’s car was later found parked at Coominches, about a kilometre from Cod’s Head, between Allihies and Eyries. A search of the coastline also recovered two fishing rods, a bag and clothing belonging to the pair.

A mass for Mr Latek was held in Holy Cross Church, Kenmare today. Said in Polish, it was attended by over 200 people, including his widow Joanna, and his father Stanislaus.
