NATO-led peacekeepers have arrested a Bosnian Serb army colonel who commanded a corps operating in eastern Bosnia during the 1992-1995 war.

Col Vidoje Blagojevic was arrested this morning in the Banja Luka public security area zone, Bosnian Serb Deputy Interior Minister Mr Zeljko Janjetovic said.

The arrest was made by British troops serving with the 20,000-strong Stabilization Force.

Col Blagojevic was the head of the engineering section of the Bosnian Serb army's Drina corps, which operated in eastern Bosnia.

The group was also involved in military actions in the former UN safe zone of Srebrenica.

The colonel is believed to be have been charged under a sealed indictment from the UN war crimes tribunal in The Hague relating to crimes committed in Srebrenica.

Up to 8,000 Muslim men vanished there after it fell to Serbs in July 1995.
