Amberleigh House was reported to be in top form this morning after his memorable victory in the Martell Cognac Grand National at Aintree yesterday.

The 12-year-old's success gave his trainer Ginger McCain a record-equalling fourth win in the race after taking the Grand National three times with the legendary Red Rum in 1973, 1974 and 1977.

The Cheshire-based trainer is now plotting to send Amberleigh House back to Aintree to bid for another success in the world's greatest steeplechase.

"We will go back for another crack next year. The plan will be the same as this season with the Becher Chase and the National in mind," said McCain.

"He's as bright as a cricket this morning. He's been out for a pick of grass on the lawn and he really does look remarkably well.

"The vets checked him out after the race and they were impressed with how slow his heartbeat was.

"He looks like he's not had a race, but obviously he has. We went to see him when we got back last night and he was perky and very relaxed."

Amberleigh House was sent off a 16-1 chance for the National after finishing second in the Tote Becher Chase over the big fences last November.

Jockey Graham Lee produced Amberleigh House on the run-in to outstay Clan Royal and Lord Atterbury.
