The funeral of murdered Latvian mother-of-two Baiba Saulite took place in her home town of Riga over the weekend.

Ms Saulite (28) was shot dead as she stood in the hallway of her north Co Dublin home on November 19th.

Hundreds of mourners, including her parents, Raitis and Ilze and her brother Karlis, attended the ceremony at the Mesha Kapi cemetery in Riga on Saturday afternoon.

Following the funeral ceremony, her coffin, decorated with flowers, was followed out of the church by her family and other mourners before she was laid to rest in an adjoining graveyard.

Her two young children did not attend the ceremony, but the Irish Ambassador to Latvia, Tim Mawe, is understood to have represented the Government.

Her solicitor, John Hennessy, who gardaí told a court last week feared for his life as a result of threats made to him, also made the journey to Latvia for the ceremony. He has been placed under armed Garda protection and was accompanied to the funeral by a garda.

At a service in her memory held in Swords last Tuesday, local priest Fr John Ferris noted that Ms Saulite had many friends in Ireland. "Those who knew her well had great admiration and love for her. She was a true friend." he said.

The Garda investigation into Ms Saulite's murder is ongoing. Gardaí last night expressed satisfaction with the level of response they have received to a recent appeal for information on her murder on RTE's Crimecallprogramme.

Crimestoppers has also offered a €10,000 reward for information on the murder.
