'Mindless' arson attack on NI special school

Damage running into thousands of pounds was caused today in an arson attack on a special care school in Co Down.

Damage running into thousands of pounds was caused today in an arson attack on a special care school in Co Down.

Police branded those responsible for the fire at the Donard Special School in Banbridge as "mindless".

A recycling bin at the rear of the school was set on fire at about 10pm on Friday and flames spread to a container which stored orthopaedic equipment including wheelchairs and walking aids, said police.

Appealing for in formation in tracking down the arsonists, detectives said they wanted to hear from anyone who was in the area of the school on Castlewellan Road and witnessed anyone acting suspiciously.

A spokeswoman said: "The impact of this mindless arson attack will have a detrimental effect on this school causing their much needed limited funding to be spent on repairing this damage instead of on necessary equipment for the children."
