Italian firefighters have quickly brought a fire at Milan's famous La Scala opera house under control, the city’s deputy mayor said this evening.

Sparks showering from above the stage at the famed building, currently undergoing a three-year renovation project, fell on oil stain underneath, igniting the flames.

But the seven firefighters permanently assigned to the building were immediately on the scene and brought the fire under control, Mr Riccardo de Corato said.

La Scala has been closed since December, and opera performances are taking place in the newly-built Arcimboldi theater in the Milan suburbs.
