Mexico City - The mayor of Mexico City, left-wing leader Mr Cuauhtemoc Cardenas, will step down next month in order to run for the presidency in the July 2000. Mr Cardenas's Party of the Democratic Revolution holds a majority in the assembly. Mr Cardenas took over as the first elected mayor of Mexico's federal district, home to about 9 million people, in December 1997.
