Khartoum - More than 1,000 people have died of meningitis in an epidemic sweeping Sudan, the health ministry said.

Khartoum - More than 1,000 people have died of meningitis in an epidemic sweeping Sudan, the health ministry said.

As of Tuesday, the disease had claimed 1,250 lives with 17,000 cases reported countrywide, Health Minister Mahdi Babu Nimir said.

Addressing parliament on Wednesday, Mr Nimir, a retired army general, appealed for international assistance in providing vaccine and medicine to fight the disease. He said health ministry teams were conducting a vaccination campaign but were running short of vaccine.
