Buenos Aires - Argentina's former president, Mr Carlos Menem, wants to run for the Senate in mid-term elections in October despite his arrest on suspicion of illegal arms sales to Croatia and Ecuador, his brother said yesterday. Mr Menem's brother, Eduardo, a senator in the opposition Peronist Party that ruled Argentina from 1989-1999, said Mr Menem, the party leader, wanted to run for senator from his native province of La Rioja to make a political gesture.

He denied Mr Menem was trying to seek parliamentary immunity from prosecution.
