McQuillan appointed acting deputy to Orde

Belfast's top police commander Mr Alan McQuillan is to act up as deputy chief constable, it was announced today.

Belfast's top police commander Mr Alan McQuillan is to act up as deputy chief constable, it was announced today.

Mr McQuillan switches from his current job as assistant chief constable for urban region with immediate effect.

A Police Service of Northern Ireland spokeswoman said he would work as Chief Constable Hugh Orde's deputy until the Policing Board's permanent appointment takes up office. It is expected this will be sometime in the new year.

Chief Superintendent Maggie Hunter, the district commander for west Belfast, will act as Assistant Chief Constable for urban region until then.

The announcement came as the previous deputy, Mr Colin Cramphorn began work in his new job as chief constable for West Yorkshire.
