Swimming:Sycerika McMahon continued her fine showing at the European Youth Olympic Festival in Tampere, Finland today, claiming a bronze medal in the final of the 200m individual medley.

The 14-year-old from Portaferry in Co Down recorded a new personal best time of 2:18.88 to add to her silver medal won in the 400m freestyle yesterday.

Having qualified in third place from the heats this morning, McMahon swam strongly throughout but was narrowly beaten by Germany’s Alexandra Wenk (2:16.48) and Cristina Garcia of Spain (2:18.14).

McMahon also qualified for the final of the 100m freestyle in a new personal best time of 58.77 and went on to finish in joint fifth place, again lowering her personal best to 58.05.

Irish lead coach Bobby Madine, who is also McMahon’s coach at Leander SC in Belfast, put her performances in context, saying: “Sycerika is now the most medalled Irish swimmer in recent Irish history at the EYOF competition.”

Dan Sweeney of Sunday’s Well in Cork qualified for the final of the 200m breaststroke with a new personal best time of 2:21.50 before going to place eighth in the final.

The Irish team also picked up their first track medal after Waterford’s Shane Quinn claimed silver in the 3000m final, coming in behind Great Britain’s Callum Hawkins in a time of 8:30.12.
