Mick McCarthy said this afternoon he will resist making "wholesale changes" in his team selection for tomorrow’s World Cup qualifier against Andorra.

However, he revealed the starting eleven will not be the same as that which began in Nicosia last Saturday.

The Irish manager, who was in an unusually upbeat mood for a press conference, said he would wait until after this evening’s training session before deciding precisely what changes to make.

He said he was conjuring with the idea of resting certain players "who’ve just come back from injury ... or who’ve had loads of games recently", while adding that others - he cited Damien Duff and Matty Holland - deserve a game on merit.

"Gary Doherty’s another who probably has good reason to think he should start ... having said that, I thought David Connolly played particularly well the other night ... he was excellent".
