Fourth seed Amelie Mauresmo had to wait two days to get her 2004 Wimbledon campaign up and running but she wasted little time in booking a place in the second round today.

The Frenchwoman's first-round encounter with Jelena Kostanic of Croatia had been held over from Tuesday because of the rain. And despite another weather break midway through the second set, the world number four took just 61 minutes to record a 6-2 6-3 victory.

Both women were content to slug it out from the baseline early on and it was Mauresmo who possessed the most power and soon raced into a 3-0 lead before taking command with a further break of serve in game five to close out the opening set against the world number 37.

In the second set, Kostanic missed a chance to move 3-2 ahead when she sent a routine forehand into the net after Mauresmo had ventured into the forecourt.

Seventh seed Jennifer Capriati brushed aside Claudine Schaul of Luxembourg 6-2 6-2 to also reach the second round.
