Fears for the proposed downgrading of Nenagh General Hospital on the recommendation of the Hanly Report look to have been allayed today despite the unveiling of plans for a new health centre in the region.

The €5.5 million centre announced today by Minister for Health, Mr Martin, aims to provide health and personal social services for north Tipperary, including public health nursing, social work and family support and community physiotherapy services.

A spokesman for Mr Martin, however, said it will not lead to the end of the A&E facilities in Nenagh General Hospital, being made available on a 24-hour basis.

Speaking in Nenagh this afternoon Mr Martin said the facility will bring together services otherwise housed in various locations. The design of the building is now completed and full planning permission has been received, he added.

The Minister also today turned the sod for a new €15.5 million community hospital in Thurles to replace the 150 year-old Hospital of the Assumption.

The Minister said: "This hospital will provide a spectrum of services for older people such as respite, rehabilitation and long-term care. Palliative care services will also be provided. Catchment area services will also be provided for young chronic sick and older persons with psychiatric problems."
