After a turbulent first week back in business after the terror attacks in New York and Washington, the US markets will be hoping for some stability. Some direction on the outlook for the short term would also be welcomed by European markets. The European Central Bank governing council meets on Thursday to debate rates just over a week after cutting them in a co-ordinated move with the Fed and the Bank of England.

The Central Bank publishes its autumn bulletin on Thursday, giving some indication of the impact of foot-and-mouth on the economy over recent months and some guide as to the expected impact of the attacks in the US in the months ahead.
