A man charged in connection with the discovery of a "Real IRA" training bunker in Co Meath last week was refused bail at the Special Criminal Court in Dublin yesterday.

Mr Damien Lawless (30), of Nicholas Avenue, Dundalk, is charged with the unlawful possession of an assault rifle, a sub-machine gun, a pistol and ammunition at Stamullen, Co Meath on October 20th.

Mr Justice O'Higgins said the court accepted the evidence of Det Chief Supt Basil Walsh that Mr Lawless would not turn up for his trial if granted bail.

The Chief Supt told the court Mr Lawless was one of 10 people arrested after Special Branch detectives raided an underground bunker at Stamullen last week. Gardai recovered three guns and ammunition and in later searches found a rocket launcher, detonators and eight bombs.

Chief Supt Walsh said the bunker was a "Real IRA" training camp and the men were being trained in the use of modern military weapons. On Wednesday five other men and a 17-year-old youth were also refused bail.
