A man who asked a 10-year-old girl to go to bed with him as she played in a public park was jailed for two months yesterday.
Kilkenny District Court heard the middle-aged man, who has a previous conviction for sexually assaulting a woman, intended to appeal his conviction.
Michael Shelley (45), of Lisnamrock, Coalbrook, Thurles, was remanded in custody for two weeks for medical/psychiatric and probation reports after he was convicted of being threatening, abusive or insulting at the fair green in Callan, Co Kilkenny.
A 10-year-old girl told the original hearing she was with her younger sister and another 10-year-old shortly before 5 p.m. last September when Shelley started following them. The other 10-year-old gave evidence that Shelley asked her to go drinking with him, and then he asked her to go to bed with him. Shelley claimed the girls asked him for drink, and wanted to use his mobile phone.
Judge William Harnett agreed to fix recognisances for an appeal.
