A man is in intensive care following a shooting incident in Waterford city on Monday evening last.

A man is in intensive care following a shooting incident in Waterford city on Monday evening last.

Joseph Flynn (26), from the Military Barracks area of the city, was shot in the stomach in Ballybeg shortly before midnight.

Mr Flynn was shot with what gardaí believe to be a handgun near a school at Clonard Park in the Waterford housing estate.

He was removed to Waterford Regional Hospital, where he underwent an operation. His condition is not believed to be life- threatening.

The area has been preserved for a technical examination.

Waterford city councillor Tom Murphy said crime in the area needed to be tackled by community representatives and groups.

No one has been arrested in connection with the shooting. Gardaí in Waterford are asking anyone with information to contact them on 051 305300.
