A man was still being held last evening by gardaí for questioning about the fatal shooting on Sunday of a 71-year-old south Mayo dairy farmer.

The victim was Tom Biggins, of Wallpark, Glencorrib, who had an extensive holding of land on the northern shoreline of Lough Corrib. Mr Biggins, a married man with a large family, died from gunshot wounds on Sunday shortly after being taken by ambulance from his isolated farm to University College Hospital, Galway.

A short time later a man in his early 30s was arrested. He was still being held at Claremorris Garda station last night.

Yesterday, State Pathologist Prof Marie Cassidy conducted a postmortem. The results have not been made known.

Gardaí were called to the two-storey house where Mr Biggins lived about 2.15pm on Sunday. They discovered the victim in a critical condition with “serious injuries”.

Gardaí have repeated their request for anyone with information to contact them at 094-9371222.
