The case against a 63 year old former soldier who organised false injury compensation claims against Cork Corporation has been dropped as a result of his death. Mr Robert Sheehan, for the Chief State Solicitor's Office, told Dublin Circuit Criminal Court that Philip O'Riordan had died and therefore the State was entering a nolle prosequi in the case.

On a number of occasions since 1994, the commencement of a four years jail term was postponed to allow O'Riordan undergo a triple bypass operation.

O'Riordan, of Mount Verdon Terrace, Wellington Road, Cork, had admitted two charges of conspiring to defraud Cork Corporation and one of conspiring to defraud AIB Bank on dates in 1989.
