A north Dublin businessman has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for raping a foreign tourist at a Killarney hotel in 2005.

Philip McGrane (39), of Moonlone Lane, Hynestown, The Naul, Co Dublin, was sentenced by Mr Justice Paul Carney at the Central Criminal Court in Dublin today.

McGrane was convicted by a jury on day-11 of his trial earlier this year of oral and anal rape, rape, and sexual assault of the victim on June 6, 2005.

Mr Justice Carney told McGrane that having regard to the violence he used in his attack on the victim he merited a 15-year sentence, however, taking into consideration he had no previous convictions he set sentences at 10 years with four years concurrent for the sexual assault.
