SEVEN people were still detained in Dublin last night by gardai investigating the murder of Veronica Guerin.

One man was expected to appear in court today on charges related to the murder of the journalist, who was shot dead in her car close to the city last June.

A Dublin man is his 50s, who was arrested in Dun Laoghaire on Wednesday, and a Dublin solicitor, are among those being held.

Six of the seven, who are held at a number of Dublin Garda stations, are detained under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act, which allows detention without charge for 48 hours. The solicitor is detained under drug trafficking legislation, which allows detention for up to a week.

The man arrested at Dun Laoghaire had been living in Britain since the murder. He arrived at the port on the Holyhead ferry on Wednesday accompanied by a woman and a child. The child was placed in the care of the Eastern Health Board after the man and woman were arrested. Two relatives of the man are among those in custody.

Meanwhile, gardai investigating the murder yesterday secured a search warrant to obtain a copy of an interview between an alleged, criminal and Pat Kenny 4 read of RTE.

The interview was taped in a London hotel early last month but not broadcast on Mr Kenny's radio show after senior gardai spoke to RTE management about, it.

During the interview with Mr Kenny the Dublin man denied involvement in the murder. Senior gardai believed his decision to grant the interview, along with an attempt to get newspapers to publish similar exculpatory material, was part of an orchestrated media campaign designed to undermine any future proceedings against him by allowing him to claim publicity prevented a fair trial.

A member of the Today with Pat Kenny programme staff said yesterday that gardai had asked for a copy of the tape on Tuesday, but the staff had refused to hand it over. Two gardai appeared at the station yesterday morning with a search warrant, which would allow them "to search the whole of Montrose", he said. At that stage the programme makers surrendered a copy of the interview.
