A man was doused in petrol by armed robbers during a terrifying attack in Co Fermanagh, it emerged today.

The victim was tied up with his partner and beaten by two masked men who forced their way into the couple's home at Letterbreen, near Enniskillen last night.

The robbers, wearing boiler suits and armed with a gun and a baton, demanded cash from their victims.

Police described the attack as vicious.

A PSNI spokeswoman said: "At one point they doused the man in petrol and threatened to set it alight if he did not tell them where [the cash] was."

After ransacking the house both men left with a large sum of money.

The couple, who managed to free themselves and raise the alarm, did not suffer severe injuries.

But police said both were extremely shocked by their ordeal.

Local SDLP MLA, Mr Tommy Gallagher, said the robbery was "a sheer act of brutality".

He said: "This was a terrifying experience for the couple who were attacked and it represents an increase in the activities of armed criminals in the area."
