A 43-year-old Belfast-born ground worker was today hailed as a hero for laying down his life to save his 18-month-old granddaughter.

Edward Moore died after saving his granddaughter Keely from drowning during a day at the beach last Sunday.

The 43-year-old Southampton-based man held her above his head as the tide raced over them at Lepe Beach near Calshot, Hampshire.

Little Keely was rescued unharmed in the drama, which was witnessed by many of Mr Moore's family.

Mr Moore spent too long under the water holding up his granddaughter and died despite being airlifted to hospital.

His son and Keely's father, Tony said Mr Moore also made sure two other girls on the family outing were saved after he handed over his granddaughter.

"He died for his family," he said. "He died a hero. We are all very proud of what he did.

"If it wasn't for him I wouldn't have a daughter today. He died for his family and he will always be looking down on us."

Police said the death on the beach was being treated as a tragic accident.
