Man dies in Howth pier incident

A man died in Howth, Co Dublin this afternoon after the car he was in plunged into the water at the pier.

A man died in Howth, Co Dublin this afternoon after the car he was in plunged into the water at the pier.

It is understood that the car which went off the open pier with two men on board may have been on a test drive from a garage.

The incident took place on the Howth middle pier at about 3.15pm.

The fire service, Coast Guard, Howth Life Boat and local gardaí arrived at the scene shortly after the incident.

One man in his 20s managed to escape from the car at around 3.30pm and was not injured.

A diver arrived on the scene at around 4.10pm and recovered the body of the deceased man. This was taken away by ambulance.

The Coast Guard booms were placed in the water to mark the location of the car at around 5pm, pending the expected removal of the car from the water with a crane.

The middle pier in the north side Dublin village is the smallest one of three and is mainly used by fishing vessels.
