Gardaí are searching for three men in connection with a fatal attack on a 28-year-old man outside a house in north-west Dublin last night.

The victim, named locally as Gerard Burnett, was stabbed more than 10 times on the doorstep of the house he shared with his girlfriend.

Gardaí said three men knocked on his front door, and carried out the violent attack when he opened it. It happened in  Castlecurragh Vale, Mulhuddart, Co Dublin, just before midnight last night.

It is understood the victim's partner was in the house at the time and ran out to the back garden in distress, carrying their young child.

"We are looking to identify these people," said a Garda spokesman.

"We are appealing for anyone who may have been in the vicinity to come forward."

Mr Burnett, who had several previous criminal convictions, was known to gardaí but investigators have not yet established a motive for the attack.

He was originally from the nearby Drumheath area and recently moved to the estate.

He was rushed to the James Connolly Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead within an hour.
