A jury yesterday cleared a man of killing a soldier who was knocked down at a Co Armagh checkpoint. However, Patrick David Belton from Coe's Road, Dundalk, was convicted of not being covered by insurance to drive the oil tanker involved in the incident on June 22nd, 1998.

He was fined £150 and had six penalty points endorsed on his licence.

Belton admitted being the driver but denied causing the death of Cpl Gary Fenton (29) through dangerous driving.
