A man charged with the three nail-bomb attacks in Brixton, Brick Lane and Soho in London in which three people were killed and more than 100 injured was remanded in custody for a week at West London Magistrates' Court yesterday.

Mr David James Copeland (22), from Farnborough, Hampshire, spoke only to confirm his name and address during the short hearing. No application was made for bail and he was remanded to Belmarsh high security prison in south-east London. He faces three counts of murder and three of causing explosions and will appear at Bow Street Magistrates' Court on May 10th.

The court was told that Mr Copeland was arrested at his home on Saturday morning as a result of a telephone call from a member of the public. In addition to the three murder charges, Ms Sue Taylor, for the Crown Prosecution Service, said Mr Copeland faced charges in connection with the Brixton bomb which left 45 people injured, the Brick Lane bomb, in which seven people were injured, and the nail-bomb attack on the Admiral Duncan pub on Friday evening in which three people died and 65 were injured.

Nineteen people were still receiving hospital treatment yesterday after the Soho attack. Six are in a serious condition. They include Mr Julian Dykes (25), whose wife Andrea (27) and the best man at their wedding, Mr John Light (32) were killed in the explosion. Ms Dykes was four months' pregnant.
