A man appeared in Athlone Court yesterday charged with a killing outside a Galway pub in the early hours of Monday morning

A man appeared in Athlone Court yesterday charged with a killing outside a Galway pub in the early hours of Monday morning. Mr Sean Walsh (23), of Kiltormer, Ballinasloe, is charged with the unlawful killing of Mr Thomas Coen at Moaty, Kiltormer, on November 17th.

Mr Gearoid Geraghty, solicitor, successfully applied for free legal aid after the accused man said he earned £112 a week as a carpenter in a local furniture factory.

Dressed in jeans, a pullover and anorak, the accused man sat with his parents before yesterday's brief remand appearance.

Judge Mary Fahy remanded him on bail in his own surety of £5,000 plus two independent sureties of £5,000 each to appear at Eyrecourt District Court next Tuesday. A condition of his bail was that he report to Ballinasloe Garda station every Saturday.

The judge said she was granting the defendant free legal aid in view of his earnings and of the seriousness of the charge.
