Man charged with 40 counts of sexual assault

A man has appeared at New Ross District Court, Co Wexford, charged with 40 counts of sexual assault.

A man has appeared at New Ross District Court, Co Wexford, charged with 40 counts of sexual assault.

The charges relate to alleged incidents in New Ross and Dublin dating from 1981 to the 1990s. There are eight alleged victims.

The accused was arrested at 7.45am in New Ross on Tuesday and brought to New Ross Garda station. He had nothing to say when the charges were set out.

The court heard the Director of Public Prosecutions had directed that he be sent forward for trial. Judge Donnchadh Ó Buachalla fixed bail of €10,000 in the defendant's own bond and an independent surety of €10,000.

The defendant was remanded to New Ross District Court on May 22nd. Judge Ó Buachalla directed the media not to report his name or those of the eight alleged victims.
