A Sudanese man charged with firearms offences after arriving at London's Heathrow Airport from Washington was remanded in custody by magistrates today.

Mr Alwasila Alhibr Wassila (45) spoke through an interpreter to confirm his name and age at London's Bow Street magistrates court.

The case was adjourned until January 23rd. Mr Wassila will next appear on February 13th.

Mr Wassila was arrested on Wednesday after passing through a security check following his arrival on a Virgin Atlantic flight from Washington's Dulles airport en route to Dubai.

Security sources said Mr Wassila had five bullets of two different types.

British police said today he had been charged with two offences of possession of prohibited ammunition under Britain's Firearms Act, and one charge of possessing dangerous articles on an airliner.
