Police in Australia have charged a man over the serious assault of a young Cork man who remains in a coma after being badly beaten near his apartment at Coogee in Sydney in August.

New South Wales Police said today a 30-year-old man from the Bankstown area of Sydney had been arrested and later charged with one count each of attempted murder and aggravated robbery with wounding.

He was refused bail and is due to appear in court tommorrow. The man's 19-year-old girlfriend was arrested yesterday and charged with hindering police and concealing a serious offence. She was granted conditional bail and is due to on October 29th .

David Keohane (29) was found laying on the ground at Brook Street, near the intersection of Kidman Street at Coogee, suffering head injuries after he had left a friend's party.

He received such severe injuries that it took two days to identify him following the attack. Given the extent of the injuries, police initially thought Mr Keohane had been slashed with a knife. He has since had facial reconstruction surgery.

Mr Keohane, who worked as a floor contractor, a lifeline counsellor and volunteered with under- privileged children, was taken home to Ireland by his family on September 15th following after a series of fundraising events to cover the cost of bringing him back to Cork.
