The Spanish Olympic Committee today chose Madrid over Seville as its candidate to stage the 2012 Summer Olympics.

The Spanish capital polled 157 votes against Seville's 103.

Spain are bidding to host the Olympics for the first time since the 1992 games in Barcelona.

Madrid is likely to face competition from New York, Paris, London, Moscow, Rio de Janeiro and a German city to be selected in April.

The International Olympic Committee will choose the host city when it meets in Singapore in July 2005.
