Ten people in canoes adrift in Lough Foyle were rescued by the Irish Marine Emergency Services yesterday following a report that they were being washed out to sea. The two adults and eight children (aged nine to 14), were brought ashore by Greencastle coastal unit boats. One child taken to Altnagelvin hospital in Derry is understood to be fine.
Also involved in the rescue were boats at the scene, an Air Corps helicopter based at Finner Camp in Donegal, and the Portrush lifeboat launched at the request of the Northern Ireland Coastguard. In another incident a 10year-old girl whose canoe capsized was rescued at Claycastle, near Youghal, Co Cork yesterday.
