Lords clear welfare package

London - The British government's welfare reform package finally cleared parliament last night after a bitter tussle between the Lords and Commons. Just 24 hours earlier, peers had challenged MPs to rethink the proposals in the Welfare Reform and Pensions Bill. However, last night, after their amendments had been overturned again in the Commons, they backed off from further parliamentary "ping-pong".
