Police in Liverpool have named two Irish people who were among four people killed in car crash in the city on Wednesday night.

Mr Peter King (59) and his wife, Dymphna (57), from Rathfarnham in Dublin died when the Vauxhall Corsa they were travelling in collided with a Ford Fiesta at about 7.20 p.m. on Wednesday.

Sisters Ms Marcella Murphy (64), from Wirral, and her sister Ms Bairbre George (67), from Liverpool, also died in the crash in the city centre at the junction of Great Howard Street and Boundary Street.

The 71-year-old driver of the Corsa survived the crash and is being treated in hospital. His injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

The male driver (20) of the Ford, who is from the Liverpool area, is being treated in hospital for serious injuries. After colliding with the Ford Fiesta, the Corsa smashed through metal barriers and landed on its roof in a hole created by roadworks.
