Liverpool plan to build 55,000-sized stadium

Liverpool announced today they plan to leave Anfield and build a ground on nearby Stanley Park.

The club said it planned a 55,000-capacity stadium less than 300 metres from Anfield. It will cost up to £70 millon and will be ready for the start of the 2005-2006 season.

Liverpool first played at Anfield after Merseyside rivals Everton left the ground in 1892. Everton began playing there in 1882 but left after a row about rent in 1892. Everton's Goodison Park ground is on the other side of Stanley Park.

Anfield had a record attendance of almost 62,000 but since it became an all-seater stadium, capacity is 45,000. Its size is not enough to satisfy demand for tickets and the club has been looking for a solution for some time.
