Labour tables Dail motion over Laffoy inquiry

The Labour Party has tabled a Dáil motion condemning the Government over the Laffoy inquiry controversy.

The Labour Party has tabled a Dáil motion condemning the Government over the Laffoy inquiry controversy.

The motion accuses the Government of blocking Miss Justice Laffoy's inquiry into child abuse and concludes that the Government collectively, as well as the present and former Ministers for Education and Science individually, "was neither open nor transparent in its dealings with the Commission and the victims of childhood abuse".

The Labour leader, Mr Rabbitte, said he would be seeking the support of all opposition parties and independent TD in Dáil Eireann.

The Government has announced that it would allocate three hours in the chamber for statements on the matter next week. The Dáil resumes sitting on Wednesday after the summer break.

Mr Rabbitte said the Government was trying to "get away without a vote" on the motion.

"If the Government refuses to allow time for a proper and full debate we will use the first available Labour Private Members Time to force a vote on the issue," he said.
