A Co Kildare man accused of attempting to smuggle £70,000 worth of cannabis through Cardiff International Airport has appeared before Welsh magistrates.

Mr Christopher Dowling (19), of Stand House Lawns, Newbridge, is alleged to have had 17kg of the drug concealed in his luggage.

Customs and Excise officers discovered the haul after the baggage was put on the wrong flight at Alicante Airport in southern Spain on June 20th.

The luggage eventually turned up at Middlesborough Airport, and Mr Dowling was arrested when he allegedly tried to collect it in Cardiff.

During a brief hearing at Barry Magistrates' Court the man spoke only once to confirm his name. He was remanded in custody until July 15th after the prosecution requested a two-week adjournment to further prepare its case.
