Dublin needs a directly-elected Lord Mayor with executive power to reach its "full potential as a leading European capital", Fine Gael leader, Mr Enda Kenny has said.
Speaking to the Dublin Chamber of Commerce today, Mr Kenny said: "If Dublin is to realise its full potential as a vibrant capital city to live and work in then we need to see a sense of political will and determination to make decisions in the interest of the citizens and businesses of the city — and then to follow through on them."
He said: "Other cities that have achieved real change and improvement of living standards have clear lines of authority and decision-making. Dublin does not."
"To this end, Fine Gael supports the introduction of a directly-elected Lord Mayor with specific executive authority."
The Fine Gael leader said he would shortly be tabling a private members motion recommending the establishment of a single transport authority for the city.
