A JET WHICH was almost halfway across the Atlantic was forced to turn around and make an emergency landing at Shannon airport yesterday after one of its two engines failed.

Continental Airlines flight COA121 was travelling from Barcelona to Newark when the pilot declared an emergency and requested permission to land at Shannon. There were 144 passengers and crew on board.

The Boeing 757-200 touched down safely at 4.47pm with both engines functioning after the pilot managed to restart the engine shortly before arriving.

After the plane had landed, it was escorted by emergency vehicles to the terminal building.

Engineers were carrying out an inspection of the engine last night.
