The chief of the number two party in Japan's ruling coalition said today that he was supporting embattled Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori. He denied there was talk in his party of pushing the premier to step down.

Mr Takenori Kanzaki, head of the New Komeito Party, was speaking to reporters after Japanese media said earlier in the day an unidentified New Komeito executive had urged Mr Mori to resign after criticism of his response to the sinking of a Japanese ship by a US submarine. Reuters
