Police today arrested a former chairman of a tourism company owned by the Tanzi family, which controlled Parmalat, in the latest of a string of arrests linked to the food group's accounting scandal.

An investigative source said Mr Romano Bernardoni, who served as chairman of Parmatour, was arrested at his home in Bologna.

His arrest took to 19 the number of people either in jail or under house arrest in the scandal.

Parmalat founder Mr Calisto Tanzi has told investigators that about €500 million was diverted from publicly listed Parmalat into family-owned tourism companies.
