The Irish Red Cross is joining forces with Red Cross societies across Europe to implement the first EU-wide Road Safety Campaign.

The campaign, which began today, is intended to raise awareness about road safety and encourage people to learn basic first aid.

The scheme will end on European First Aid Day in September, when first aid training and classes will be held around the country, along with demonstrations of road traffic accidents and ways in which people can help.

"We are hoping to encourage people to take first aid classes so that they will learn more abo0ut the kinds of actions and remedies they can take part in," Ms Aoife MacEoin of the Irish Red Cross said today.

So far this year, there have been 93 deaths on Irish roads.
