Employers were increasingly optimistic about employment growth prospects in the first quarter of this year, according to a new report from FÁS and the ESRI released this morning.

The quarterly report on employment and vacancies found that the construction sector is booming and employment within the sector is expected to rise over the coming months.

The report says one in five building firms have vacancies that they are finding difficult to fill. In the industrial sector, slightly more employers expect employment to increase rather than to decrease. Firms in the services sector also expect employment growth.

However, the retail sector remains under pressure. Employers in this sector are pessimistic and do not anticipate employment rising in the next few months.
