Woman in 80s airlifted to hospital after crash in Donegal

Road Safety Authority concerned about number of road deaths over Christmas

A woman in her 80s was rushed to hospital by air ambulance after a crash in Co Donegal on Tuesday.

The collision between a car and a van on the outskirts of Ballyshannon happened at 2.25pm.

The crash happened close to the Cavangarden junction for Cashelard.

A Garda spokesperson said gardaí attended the scene and the driver of one of the vehicles, a woman in her 80s, was taken to Galway University Hospital for treatment of her injuries.

A motorist also died following a collision involving a bus and a car in Co Wicklow. Gardaí said the incident happened on the M11 Dublin to Wexford road at Ballynabarney at about 9.50pm on Monday.

Car and lorry

“The driver of the car, a man in his 30s, was pronounced dead at the scene,” said a Garda spokesman.

The man was the seventh person to die on the island’s roads in recent days.

Three men in their 20s were killed when a car and a lorry were involved in a crash in Garvaghy, Co Tyrone, in the early hours of Monday morning. A fourth man, also in his 20s, was taken to hospital to be treated for serious injuries.

A cyclist in his 80s died in Dublin on Monday after a collision on the Killeen Road in Ballyfermot shortly before 1pm.

Mayo collision

In Co Mayo, a man died when the car in which he was a passenger was involved in a collision with another car at about 5.35pm on Monday at the entrance to Breaffy House Hotel on the Castlebar to Balla road. He was named locally as David Henning (33), whose family run a jewellery manufacturing enterprise at Killawalla, Westport.

In Co Wexford, a man in his early 20s was killed and a woman seriously injured in a two-car collision at about 5.20pm on Sunday evening in Ballintore, Ferns. The man was named locally as John Power from Forties, Ferns.

Brian Farrell, communications manager with the Road Safety Authority, said he was extremely concerned about the number of road deaths in recent days.
