In news which will come as a shock to absolutely no one, it has emerged that Ireland is quite an expensive place to have a night out.

A study conducted by consumer network, One Big Switch, has found that dear old Ireland is the third most expensive place in Europe to have a night on the tear when cost factors including transport, dinner, drinks, babysitting and a late night kebab that you will most likely end up regretting are all totted up.

The survey puts the average cost for a night out in Ireland at a fairly eye-watering €112, just behind Denmark at €116.96. Luxembourg is the dearest place to go out for a night with the final bill coming in at €130.90.

Overall, Ireland ranks eighth for public transport and fifth for the price of fast food. It is also the fifth dearest place to have a drink and the fourth dearest place in Europe to find a babysitter with the cost put at €50 for 5 hours

The study also identified the cheapest places in Europe to visit as Bulgaria, Romania and the Czech Republic with the cost of a night out ranging from €24 to €30.

“I don’t think the results will shock many people,” said the One Big Switch campaigns director Sarah Ryan. “It’s no secret that Ireland has some of the highest prices in the EU but at the same time this study shows that a well deserved night out for many people is a costly luxury.”

Helpfully, the survey also points out what else someone could buy with the money a single night out will cost. It tells us that for the same price as a night out one could get return flights to Portugal, a wash, cut and blow-dry at a fancy salon or a camera drone.
