In the event of the overthrow of the Saddam Hussein regime, an alternative administration could be rapidly established, a spokesman for an Iraqi opposition coalition said in Dublin yesterday.

Sharif Ali Bin Al Hussain of the Iraqi National Congress (INC) said: "We have got the whole gamut of Iraqi society, politically, ethnically and religiously and what we want to do is re-establish democracy inside Iraq."

The delegation also included representatives of the Iraqi Kurds, Dr Latif Rashid of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan and Mr Dilshad Miran of the Kurdish Democratic Party. In the course of a two-day visit, they met the chairman of the Oireachtas Foreign Affairs Committee, Mr Des O'Malley, as well as opposition spokesmen and officials at the Department of Foreign Affairs.

"We are quite able to take over any transitional administration after the fall of the regime in Iraq," the INC spokesman said. "We wouldn't need a Bonn meeting or anything like that to discuss the future of Iraq because we are already able and ready to take on that role."
